The best things….

I started off my week this morning by reading a very simple statement. The best things in life aren’t things. A simple, novel, and true to the core statement.

The consumer  holiday season is in full swing. The commercials are screaming at us. Buy this, give that, spend, spend, spend. They tell us how things are going to make us happy. Beautiful, happy families.

Have you ever noticed in these commercials that the houses are almost empty? The cars have no snacks on the back seat? Everyone loves everyone and when they get that item they are forever satisfied.

The thing is, if you are not happy right now. If you are not ok with who you are or what your situation is, there is nothing you can buy that will fix that.

There is no item that can impact your soul the way people can. The way time can. The way love can.

I watched the movie Running The Sahara this weekend.  In this movie, in which 3 men literally ran across Africa. The clips that hit home the most are not the ones about running, rather the ones about life.

I see people, families, villages, entire countries that lack the “things” that we here in America call “necessities”. Yet, you see joy. You see love. You see happiness.

I am certainly not saying we would be better off without electricity, living in mud huts. I am saying we would be better off knowing and understanding that we could be. We should reevaluate what our wants vs. what our needs are.

Take a minute to watch this video. Think about it. Give less presents, give more presence. Love more, spend less. This is our holiday season. Let’s take it back. Giving more love and less stuff.
